Weird Child--prog. house--at 111 Minna on 9/17 I love Minna Street. Not because it looks like some back-street rat's arse of a place from the exterior that opens up into a beautiful butterfly once you get inside- not only that- but because it's where the people meet the people who know the people who drew the art. The walls of Minna St. are decked out in some tragically inspired pieces of modern canvas, and you can bet your bottom dollar that some of these ear-less wonders will be stamping loose on the 111 jive floor. Half of my game was to guess who they were. The S&M friendly couple twitching and shuddering to the house beat to my right? Mr and Mrs "head in a postmo. box" up centre or the cute fly guy behind? God only knew who the brains were behind the centipeed baby dolls. I hoped it wasn't the DJ. Judging by the spinning, these guys (or am I correct in thinking 'Wierd Child' is just DJ Winston?) were solely focused on the work in hand: truly Matissees of the music world. I gather they've grown to success through word of mouth parties and it's no wonder the gobs have been wagging. I'd class it a near-millenial fusion of house-fun breakbeats on a techno tip. And in a couple of decades you'll auction it off at priceless. The revolving beat just kept extending: through the best of pop-sampled upliftment towards the darker galaxies of out-of-here up-tempo realms. If they're on again- or even if they're not- just get yourself down to the goddamn place and drag your best mate onstage. And don't forget your favorite paintbrush either. Jessica Yorke. |
