More quality, unpretentious dining has come to SoMa. Walk into Sushi Groove South and you’re immediately comfortably part of the cozy, spacious bar area. Grab an Asahi before your meal and chat with the friendly bartender as you bop to the DJ groove. You’ve gotta love restaurants that give equal dedication to ambiance and food. The place is gorgeous and the food is just as tasty. After drinks, the hostess walked us back into the main dining area (you can also sit at the semicircle counter). The area is lit only by candles and seating is in the form of velvety couches and chairs. Start with cold unfiltered sake ($8) and some edamame ($8). All the rolls are great and at reasonable prices. Shrimp tempura roll was savory and crispy. Rock n’Roll and Spicy Tuna roll were spiced just right. Kamikaze roll was one of the better versions of that standard. Apparently the nigiri was great as well, as my companions were swooning over the salmon and unagi. Sushi Groove south’s atmosphere is comfortable and sensory, the clientele is down-to-earth, and the waitstaff is gracious. This is a restaurant that knows how to make a dining experience comfortable and enjoyable from beginning to end. The only challenge is finding it—it’s on Folsom between 11th and 12th, virtually hidden behind a big iron door, across the street from Holy Cow. Great for dates and gatherings alike. |
