Calling all dead heads. Why am I not doing more mind altering drugs? Is it because they're too dangerous, too expensive, or too illegal? No, no and no. Could it be that Jerry's dead? Bingo. Oh sure, I could go to Phish shows, and I do, but it's not the same. Phish shows, with their jazz-informed rock, are too complicated for hallucinogenics. But the Grateful Dead's blues and folk inspired rock is simpler, earthier and just plain goes better with mushrooms. Oh well. I guess I'll just pierce my eyebrow, take some "smart drugs," and go to a techno show. What? Strangefolk is playing Saturday night at the Fillmore? Okay, so they're from Vermont, and currently living in Phish's shadow. But Strangefolk, a bluegrass/folk /rock 'n' jam band, has more in common with the rootsy Dead than with their progressive mentors, Phish. I know what you're thinking: Aren't all these stoner bands the same? Some of them are, and that's the point. But Strangefolk isn't one of those tribute bands that grieving dead heads flock to, so they can close their eyes and pretend Jerry's still alive. On their major label debut, WEIGHTLESS IN WATER, Strangefolk delivers their own unique brand of folk (hence the name strange folk) by combining bluegrass influence with pop melodies, rock guitar, and impressive harmonies. Despite their obvious influence, the only direct tribute to the Dead on this album can be found in "Westerly,"a reverent send-off that pays homage to Jerry Garcia's legacy without genuflecting. Strangefolk's lyrics can also be fun and quirky like when on "Valhalla," they sing about "someone...in the bathtub/ passing time and drinking local beer. " But the folky rock tune "Roads" contains my favorite Strangefolk lyric and slacker school of optimism mantra"I don't know where I'm going, but I'll get there." And, of course, I'm sure they will. And so will I--to the Fillmore that is. Check these guys out at their all ages show at the Fillmore, 105 Geary Blvd. Saturday, October 3rd, 8 PM. $12.50. Call 510-762-2277. |
