Like cousin Dianda's, Stella owes nothing to Tennessee Williams' dysfunctional character from Streetcar and everything to Italian immigrants who transported their celebratory baking style to North Beach in the last century. Famous for Sacripantina (a white multi layered extravaganza with the best zabegloni --spelling courtesy of the lady who sold it to me -- a rich sherry, marsala and rum custard ) imaginable. They're equally well known for a great tiramisu, cannoli, sfogliatelle, panettone and biscotti (all the house's spelling). Like Dianda's, Stella is a wall of soothing white. There are some outdoor tables to enjoy a slice and frothy cappuccino while you watch the world go by on busy and beautiful Columbus avenue, the Champs Lysee of North Beach. Prepare to be smothered with affection from the smiling madonna-like ladies behind the counter; they are helpful, sincere, and couldn't care about spelling. I hope you enjoy Stella. Generation after generation of San Franciscans and tourists share a passion for this authentic Italian bakery. Stu Smith Comments and suggestions to Stusmith97@aol.com |
