After a long hiatus from large clubs, I reunited myself with Spundae. Over Memorial Day weekend, I went to 1015 Folsom on Sunday night because Dave Ralph was spinning. Times have changed! If you are an old-timer who now sticks to smaller venues and you’ve been to Spundae recently, you know what I mean. Of course it was a three-day weekend and we all know these events draw a bridge ‘n tunnel/San Jose rave crowd like no other, but most of us have learned to dance around those harmless fun-seeking haven’t-gotta-clue souls. Now, however, there is a new challenge. Watch out! Britney Spears lookalikes abound! They were everywhere. I tripped over them in the bathroom line. I brushed shoulders with them on the stairs. I squeezed between them at the bar. I spied on them from my comfy couch space. In every direction there were little girlies (are they really 21?) whose supple tan bellies (tans in SF?) peeked out from under snug-fitting pastel T’s decorated with sequined stars, American Flags, and suggestive phrases. These young women donned big white tennies (probably spot-treated the next evening) and sported straight legged, light colored, low riding pants. I was repulsed and fascinated at the same time. To my surprise, my attitude changed as I kept an eye on these little chicks. Clans of young men wearing bright beaded necklaces swarmed and swung glow sticks in front of the glittery wide-eyed Britney faces. I scanned the crowd for chaperones. Wasn’t anyone there to look after these innocents? Were these gyrating wannabes really bringing out my Mother Hen instincts? As night became morning, I found myself far less distracted by the Britneys. I even grinned happily at one on the dance floor! Go figure. Most likely, I was enjoying the music and my companions far too much to be bothered by the Britney Spears of the world. Perhaps most of the girls had gone home to make their curfews, or maybe there hadn’t been that many there in the first place. Or, quite possibly (ech-hem), I realized that in a former life I was one of them. Spundae has a snazzy website located at http://www.spundae.net. Also check out http://www.1015.com. June '00 |
