Many sushi lovers have been "boated" one too many times. Empty sushi bars where floating purveyors of sake maki float around for more than ten minutes are a no-no. Happily, there’s a bustling boat bar within walking distance of the Sunnyvale Caltrain depot. The location of Sushi Maru couldn’t be more perfect for the homebound commuter; the ambience, however, is a little closer to Denny’s than any gourmet den. Still, this clean, well-lit, down-home sushi joint provides slender, succulent rows of maki. If sushi boating appeals to you, Sushi Maru provides a steady supply of all varieties of maki, including the much-adored eel and salmon. Of course, it’s best to show up at the busiest hour of 7:30 or 8, when boating is sure to be plentiful. Any later than nine p.m. and you’re doomed to dip stale maki rolls and dry wedges of fish. For folks who like to dole out exorbitant helpings of wasabi and ginger, there are mini containers on every table. And if you choose to order particular rolls, the service is fast and fresh. When you’ve deemed yourself sushi-saturated and paid the reasonable bill, it’s time to taste a gummy bear waiting at the cash register! Stroll the nearby shops, after-dinner venues and all the comfortable possibilities of the neighborhood. Enjoy Sushi Maru and its funky Sunnyvale locale. |
