All members of the Mission Yuppie Eradication Project, stop right here because you are not going to like what I have to suggest. For the rest of you SUV driving, stockbroking dilettantes who are sick of reading about the woes of gentrification, this is your chance to throw your hat into the ring of consumption and head on out to Potrero Hill. Located on Florida at Mariposa, the Potrero Brewing Company not only has two floors, four pool tables, an outdoor patio, 2 dart boards and a fireplace, it has one of the largest doors in the city. Don’t let the big black door scare you, though, because inside you’ll be able to cozy up with their homebrewed specialties. The newest addition to an area that used to belong solely to Muni Drivers, public television employees and artists, this brewpub is a bound to become a sizable influence on the neighborhood. Huge tanks brew strong beers while its warehouse décor leaves plenty of space for gathering. Industrial art objects line the walls and votive candles rest on the bar, giving it an almost-hip impression that at least gets credit for effort. The food is on the better side of bar food with mini pizzas, sandwiches and other standards. As you may have already guessed, the crowd tends to be the after-work type at all hours. Even on Saturday at 10 PM you’ll find it looking like Harrington’s on Friday at 5 PM. The Potrero Brewing Company certainly doesn’t cater to the neighborhood artists at Cell or Theater Artaud, but serves as a stopping point for those on their way to or from Blowfish Sushi and Gordon’s House of Fine Eats. Yuppies, in other words. But, hey, we weren’t all born Eradicators and somebody’s got to do the drinking. So grab a patio table, order a porter, play some pool, throw a few darts and marvel at the big black door. |
