Marzipan

Now that my doctor has finally given me a Valium prescription, my favorite Sunday night activity has been popping a couple pills and watching VH-1 Behind the Music. It's usually a pretty good time, except when Tony Orlando pisses me off.

Don't get me wrong, I really like Tony Orlando--in a three-times-on-the-ceiling-twice-on-the-pipe kind of way, but I take exception to his whining and bitching about the British Invasion stealing his career.

I love the British Invasion. It was British, it was an invasion, and no one dumped tea in a harbor. What's not to love? Nothing.

The same can be said for three man group, Marzipan. They didn't exactly invade, though. They're a San Francisco band with a British sound--think roots rock if your roots are the Beatles and the Sex Pistols. Get Herman and the Hermits out of your head, right now! These guys rock. Yeah, they can crank out pop melodies, but they can also strip the music down to a raw, hard-driving beat.

I'd go see this band just for the rhythm section with bassist, Jason Kuczenski, and Tom Marzella, the best drummer I've seen in this town. But lyricist and guitarist, Seth Bender has a great four-shots-of-tequila fuzziness to his otherwise polished style that makes this band worthy of an invasion of their own. Check them out at Dylan's. Only don't take Valium before the show, you'll need your energy. Drink beer instead.
