It
doesn't get much more random than this. Lord of Balls Lounge in Japantown.
Upstairs from Dot Restaurant, Lord of Balls is decked out in velour chaises
and mocking paintings. By all rights, this bar should be awful. It's tacky.
It's in a cement block of a hotel, the Radisson Miyako. It's over-the-top.
Did I say tacky? But actually, the bar is very pleasant these days. The
last few times I've gone, it's been peaceful and empty. And overrun by no
one. Ohh, ok, so there were the model tryouts for the bridal fair but that
was a little light bonus entertainment that we didn't have to pay for.
The drinks, they're good. The apple martinis here had me hooked for at least a month. It was the cinnamon swizzle stick that threw me over the edge. Fortunately, I've moved on. The dirty martinis are darn tasty. Three olives make me happy. And the bartenders? Old School. Possibly retirees from the Tadich Grill. This is one of the few places you can go to in San Francisco and have a conversation AND sit in a comfy chair. It's a great place to visit before or after the flix at Kabuki. What's up with the name? Nicholas Graham, the knickers behind Joe Boxer, bought the title. And now he is Lord of Balls. And the balls behind the Lounge. Thumbs up.
