A beautifully restored neo-classical building featuring some important 'Old Masters' and important Impressionists and a trove of worthy Rodin sculpture. There's a small but fascinating collection of illustrated books that rotates.

Visiting shows recently have been brilliant including the best pieces from the V&A. Coming soon, (June 12- Aug 2) is a Francis Bacon retrospective.

Take out of towners here first over other museums in town. They'll be in awe of their surroundings; the view from the museum to the Golden Gate Bridge is breathtaking. And there's a fine walk around Land's End that offers views all the way out to the Farallon Islands on a clear day.
