Melinda takes you on this week's Music Bender

DJ Scantron describes his music as a mix of electro jungle and hip-hop; but I feel like that description isn't complete until you mention his subtle kiss of 1980's dance and techno that makes you think that maybe your babysitter in 1981 had the right idea about being in love with Kraftwork. Cocktail in hand, I sat perched on a barstool at the Attic last Wednesday night, heart and head keeping time to the music, marveling at the genius of an era that too many people want to forget just because of that Flock of Seagulls thing. No, no, no! How can you try to ignore the infectious beats and bassline of Young MC, the brilliant simplicity of New Order, or the impulse to "get into the groove" with a vintage Madonna dance mix? Scantron takes the best of a forsaken decade and strings it together with modern drum & bass and dance -- and an occasional Sisters of Mercy sample..... and that's what I call an evening of musical bliss.

So, despite my exhaustion on that particular evening, I kept ordering drinks, enjoying the music, and philosophizing on the importance of the Kraftwork influence in modern society, until DJ Scantron finished his set at last call with a soothing Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood duet. No, it wasn't 80's, or electro jungle, or hip-hop ..... but it was the perfect end to the evening. And it was at that moment that I realizied that it's not about the genres; it's about the songs that make you realize why you love music -- and you're thankful that there is someone like DJ Scantron there to play them for you.

* Bonus DJ!*

My close personal DJ friend, DJ GOLDMYNE, is spinning his patented "SOULNESS" gig

Thursday, June 3, starting at 9pm at COSMOS (corner of 21st Street and Bryant).

The bar is great, but the music is an even better reason to come... it's vintage soul, R&B, and funk 45's. The management is willing to give DJ GOLDMYNE a permanent gig if the crowd is big enough, so we're counting on the support of the fans! Come join the party to make SOULNESS a weekly San Francisco groove solution. We like the funk!
