Amidst a number of Asian restaurants along Clement, you probably wouldn't expect to find one of the best live music clubs in the city, but Last Day Saloon is there - and it rocks! The bar is divided into two parts - a street level area where a more regular crowd hangs out, and the upstairs area where the bands perform. If you arrive early, you can hang out downstairs, and play a game of pool, foosball, or pinball, or just chill out at the bar. If you're there for the music, head on upstairs. There's lots of room to mill about, and there are several tables, but most of the square footage is reserved for standing. The highlight of the décor is the hundreds of band names that are scribed on the walls, from classic names like Foghat and Albert King, to local favorites such as MIRV and Box Set. The venue books a lot of jam bands, as well as rock, folk and blues influenced acts. The crowd is on the younger side compared to other live music clubs in the city, which is likely due to its proximity to U.S.F. The cover charge ranges from about $3 to $8, and is payable on your way upstairs. Last Day Saloon just celebrated its silver anniversary last year, and continues to very supportive of local music talent, while also booking some of the best up-and-coming national acts. - Steve Cefaratti |
