The Justice League is stylized, modern and hip. Unlike the SOMA dance Mecca's with their disco decor, this venue is very of its time. A mural stretches around the clubs interior; iconic graffiti, urban graphics. Some nights you'll see Japanese anime projected on a cinema size screen, reels celebrating the seventies high tech/low tech aesthetic. Think low rez, pixilated, punch cards and tape reels -- then think how quickly things are changing and the relationship between art and technology. The club seems to be attracting a host of top name talent, but refreshingly, avoids pigeonholing itself by showcasing musicians from diverse genres. Hip Hop names like De La Soul and Digital Underground made recent appearances. Drum and Bass, Techno, House, World Music, Dub, Rock and Samba, they've all had their nights. Not many venues in San Francisco try to cultivate such a musical mix. If the holy trinity for a successful club is the music the space and the people, then The Justice League also scores well in the third part of the triage. This *is* a mixed crowd, both chronologically and racially. The attitude factor is low, and while it may be hip (in the best sense of the word) its certainly not exclusive. Some nights can be crowded, and the sound system could use a little more definition in the low end, but all in all, this is somewhere that's doing a lot for the music scene in San Francisco. Worth checking out. Gary Burns |
