Travel: Getaways from San Francisco

An interview with Spesh.

Three years on, and QOÖL happy hour at 111 Minna on Wednesdays keeps drawing a crowd. Thanks to Jondi and Spesh of LOÖQ Records.

Why Spesh? What is Spesh? What does it mean?

Spesh is short for "Special K". My given name is Stephen Kay and, in 1989, Special K seemed to be a great dj name. A few years into it and other Special Ks started popping up so I reverted to Spesh. Odd thing - the remaining DJ Special K's seem to still be doing what I was doing when I

first started - putting tapes out with covers that look like Special K cereal boxes! Even my "non-music friends" call me Spesh.

Best places to spin outside of America?

Holland is great! Nice people. They made me unafraid of harder music. Jerry Bonham tells me that that Mexico rocks.

One place you've wanted to spin but haven't is where?

The UK We (Jondi & Spesh) are very popular there now, so we'd love to check it out. Plus they're so picky about what style the music is. Stuff is in then it's out very quickly. I'd love to see how they react to one of my sets.

Do you own:

-cellphone: Working on that tumor!

-pager: I share one with Jondi.

-PDA: I have an orange one! Jondi has a green one, and we're about to get our doorman at the club a clear one.

-laptop: Who doesn't? A G3.

-wireless modem: Nope, not yet anyway.

DJs you're in awe of?

John Digweed is one of the best! He works his mixes so long it's amazing. I love to watch Carl Cox too - always working all three turntables. Laurent Garnier is great because he mixes styles up and gets away with it.

Best hill to have a sunrise picnic breakfast on in San Francisco?

Coit Tower above North Beach! Urban, yet beautiful. New York can't touch this sort of thing.

Are you on any email lists that you'd recommend?

SF Station has a good list. Arty stuff as well as the usual parties, raves, etc. SF Raves is a classic though!

Do you have a favorite brand of scotch?

Bushmills (on the rocks).

Do you have any guilty pleasures on the Internet?

Ego surfing. Yep, I do it. Gotta find out who's charting Jondi & Spesh!
