Windsurf Goggling Down at Crissy Field

Evenings down at Crissy Field looking out onto the Bay are evenings when you understand why you'll put up with road rage on Hwy 101, bank-busting rents, and car-shattering pot holes. If you go down there at about 6pm on the weekends and Wednesdays (basically, once the majority of sailboats are off the water) you'll find the windsurfing fanatics of the Bay Area enjoying the gale force winds.

Common sense whispers in my ear that it just can't be all that much fun to be sucked into a wet suit leaving my hands and feet exposed to the icy water. Yet, every evening that I take myself down to the little hair of sand bordering the Bay I begin to conjure up images that by this time next year, I, too, will be pulling fancy tricks amongst the fog horns.

Dress for the wind. I'd highly recommend fleece, a beach chair and a good book. What could be better, the picture perfect sunset with the Golden Gate in the background and the cool eyecandy of windsurfers? You won't be alone: the parking lot is usually filled with Land Rovers and other I'm-too-fit-for-my-utility-vehicle folks sporting their City Front racks. It's a family occasion. Relax and be glad you live in San Francisco. Check out http://www.sfba.org for some more local info on this topic. Frequent classes and weekend long camps are held by ABK Sports.
