T-Dance at The EndUp

401 6th Street

Sunday 5:30am-2am on Monday

Hallo, San Francisco! You wanna talk institutions, let's talk The EndUp on a Sunday afternoon.

And if it's sunny out, well, then there really aren't many other places in this fine mini city of ours that provide as much entertainment as sitting on the porch at the EndUp, soaking in the rays and watching and meeting a soufflé slice of society. And let me tell you, there are a good number of layers here. Ranging from the fluffy ponces who arrive in their Gucci loafers (soon to be covered in dust) to those whom you recognize as begging outside of a Market Street McDonalds.

Best fun of all is to be there when David Harness is spinning which usually is in the early evening. He's nothing short of brilliant when he's at the EndUp and it's clear that he's having a fun time as he grooves to his own spun sounds. And so is everyone on the dance floor. It's all about a good vibe.

As always, The EndUp can be a bit of a hit-or-miss time but during the summer on a sunny day, the T-Dance is the way to go. The dance floor here is fairly small, but no one gives a hoot. There isn't one reason in the world not to bop outside on the porch and you can be sure that many people do. For those who are serious about their dancing, there are about eight spots on the dance floor that are directly in front of a mirror. Perfect those moves. And feel free to bring talc powder, too. It's all good. Look up onto the ceiling and you'll see these rather bizarre styrofoam cut-outs in fluorescent colors. Just in case you find yourself horizontal on the floor. And should that happen, don't worry, no one will bat an eye. Except security.

Who goes here? Like I said, you never know whom you might bump into. On more dismal days, there are fairly slim pickings with folks who have sped through the weekend and are looking every bit haggard. Otherwise, there's a little bit of everything here. I reckon on a Sunday afternoon it's a tad more straight than gay but it's hard to tell. Seriously, no one cares.

The EndUp, located in the heart of SOMA is rather ironically sandwiched in between the police station headquarters and the highway overpass. It costs $5 to get in.

Their information line is 415-357-0827.
