A farmer's market is just not the bargain shopping ground one hopes for. For that matter, roadside veggie stalls are often not the most economical choice either. But somehow I feel particularly righteous when I buy my vitamin snacks with the dirt still on them. Dirt made my lunch… or so goes the camp song. I don't think that the Farmers' Market down by Embarcadero in San Francisco has ever claimed to be anything but the outdoor designer food mart that it is. Now it's just bigger and better and has restaurants and gourmet stores too. At the weekend, people get dressed to come down to this gourmand's paradise. Nice shoes always. During the week, the shops remain open, of course, and the restaurants are doing a brisk business with locals from the Financial District as well as visitors.
On the restaurant front, you have plenty of choices: Lulu Petite, Lulu's mini, serves up quickie gourmet lunches; The Slanted Door continues to serve up top-notch Vietnamese for the masses, and many others.
