Cate Blanchett is beautiful. There is plenty of beauty in Elizabeth. I admit to not knowing very much of this dramatic and exciting period of history. Perhaps I skipped school during those days to entertain my mother (a woman who could compete with Elizabeth's older sister for warmth and stability). More likely, this was never taught to me, since I attended the High School of the Damned. Fortunately, I saw this film with an educated friend who was able to give me some quick background and fill in some holes throughout. This is, by no stretch of the imagination, an intimidating history lesson of a film. PBS would reject it wholeheartedly. It is more like "MTV Does History." Elizabeth is visually entertaining, engrossing, and vapid. I was disappointed when it ended. I wanted to see Liz kick ass for a few more decades, not read a tag line at the end of the movie telling me that's what she did. I got over it, though. The ending felt like the setup for a sequel. I hope it is called Elizabeth Moons the Pope. Who are the Catholics kidding? Their hypocrisy knows no bounds. Some things never change. Patrick Connors |
