Often outspoken, and obviously over 80, founder, owner, and self proclaimed "super chef" Rip Wilson is still to be found playing host at his outstanding restaurant at the corner of Telegraph and 51st. Shirts and shoes are required. Foul language is prohibited.

The menu includes everything you need from catfish to spaghetti, and in Rip's own words, he could "cook water and make it taste good." My advice: fried chicken. Choose any entree with your choice of two sides -- collard greens, red beans, sweet potatoes, and rice are among the all credible options. All for around $9. For a few bucks more, ask for the peach cobbler. If you're lucky, and if they like you, it won't be sold out.

Expect to wait for the service and the food. Even when nearly empty, it may take half an hour for your meal to arrive. Nobody seems to mind. Ample amusement is found on the walls, adorned with reviews, awards, and photos of Rip with famous visitors. On a good night, Rip himself will entertain you. The beer list includes Bud and... Bud Light. Sometimes, just Bud Light. It's all you'll need.
