Forget everything you know about Pie Queens. Lois transcends the genre. Located on Sixtieth street about 2 blocks west of MLK, Lois aims to please. Recommended for breakfast, brunch, or an afternoon snack. Reggie Jackson, in his days with the Athletics, would find his way here almost daily after his workout. Regulars say he became so comfortable that he would often put on an apron and serve coffee or help out at the register. He and Lois are pictured together behind the counter.

Reggie, of course, moved on, and Lois herself died some years ago. The restaurant is run by her son now. Faithful to her tradition, pies abound. Reggie is commemorated on the menu. About 7 bucks buys his favorite: 2 eggs any style and 2 pork chops. For about the same price you can choose Salmon Croquettes or Fried Chicken, or steak with your eggs. All options include your choice of hashbrowns or grits, and biscuits or toast. If you know anything at all about life, you'll get the biscuits. On the pie front, take your pick from chocolate cream, banana, apple, berry, or my favorite, lemon icebox.

Coffee is average. Service is familiar. The decor, unremarkable. Go for the food, you won't be disappointed.
