Drum and Bass in a Week

by Camper

A few years ago there weren't any jungle weeklies in San Francisco. Now we have at least one on six nights of the week. Nights pop up and go away faster than I change my underwear. Which, I might add, is fairly often.

MONDAY

Density at the Justice League
This night is a hit or miss depending on the guest DJ. I've been there when I was one of five people and when I was one of hundreds. They routinely host some of the best local and international DJs. Naturally the big names draw the big crowds but it would be great if you could just show up and expect a good party. No such luck. I've gone on several occasions where I had to kill time by drinking as much beer as possible just so that I could go to the bathroom for a change of scenery. The quality of the sound system is pretty poor as well, which makes this night only worth attending when the guest is spectacular.

TUESDAY

Phuncktion at The Top
Phuncktion started only a few weeks ago with DJs from the Phunckatech crew; it's looking great so far. This is my favorite group of DJs in SF and the Top is my favorite bar. It's a small place with a small dancefloor, and on this night there are more people dancing then chugging beer. Great crowd, great bar, great drinks, great music. Go.

Spark at Backflip
Backflip is a great looking bar, but I haven't yet been to a DJ night that I've enjoyed here. I went this week to find a better crowd than normal for a Backflip event, but it wasn't enough to shake that tourist trap feeling. The night is enjoyable if you want to go to Backflip, enjoy some drinks in luxury blue-pool-decor style and hear D&B as background music. If on the other hand you're looking for serious booty shaking, I would suggest Phuncktion.

WEDNESDAY

Audible Colors at The Top
Every other week there are guest DJs spinning D&B at The Top. The times I've been there it became fairly crowded as the evening progressed, with everyone having a good time. There's something about Wednesdays that make people go wacky.

THURSDAY

Eklectic
I loved this night when it was hosted in its previous location at Kate O'Briens before it moved to the new space at Rico's Pizza on Minna. The new space feels more like a warehouse party than a club night. I raved enough for two lifetimes while in my youth and now I seek a bit more than concrete floors in my choice of dance venue. In addition it has turned into an 18+ night which makes me feel far older than I do already. Still, this is one of the best D&B nights in the city, and I can't resist going on occasion. The house sangria helps. The crowd is fun and friendly and the music is almost always right-on.

FRIDAY

The basement at 1015 Folsom
The basement of 1015 Folsom street is promoted separately for the Drum and Bass DJs, though it wouldn't be worth the money to go only for that section of the club. It's fun down in the basement not only cause the music is good and it's less crowded, but also because that's where you can watch blatant drug abuse taking place in the dimly lit booths. Unfortunately this also leads to someone throwing up down there every single time and the smell lingers. Whenever I go to 1015 Folsom (rarely) I end up spending a good amount of time in the basement, but then again I live in the ghetto and it seems more like home.

SATURDAY

La Belle Epoque at The Top
This night is great but it's a small bar and it gets more packed than my bathroom on free cocaine night. It's best to go early and enjoy it before you're getting bumped into left and right. The music is first-rate and it's almost worth fighting for a space at the bar to hear it.

SUNDAY

Nothing. Take a Quaalude.

PARTIES

There are several groups that throw one-off parties around the city. My favorites are the Vertigo and Bug'n Out parties. Vertigo throw events around the city and occasional beach parties in the summer. You can find out about them by picking up flyers in shops or at other jungle events.

Linkage:
Though most weeklies are also listed on SF Sidewalk, SFStation, and Hyperreal, the best local site devoted to Drum and Bass is San Francisco Drum and Bass .
