Stars terrify me. However, they improve greatly if I have a solid glass of wine while looking at them and I have good company around me. So, last week, I persuaded about 15 folks to go up to Fairfax for some dins at Cafe Amsterdam, and then we headed on up to the trailhead on the Bolinas Road. A very fun evening. Highly recommended for city folks who could do with a brief respite from the fog and wheezing Muni buses. Cafe Amsterdam is a solid bet if you're going to be eating in Fairfax. There are usually about five daily specials (Jake had the blue cheese pasta--hello, coronary! and it was delicious. I had a bite.), And then there's a large (plastic) menu with all the regular burgers, pastas, whopping salads, fishes, and what-have-you. American food, nothing fancy. Most of us tucked into some variety of burger or another. I had the burger with brie (about $8). Which was literally a patty of meat with a slab of quasi melted brie thrown on top. Brie in any form agrees with me so I was most content. Wines by the bottle start at $18. We seemed to go through an inordinate number of bottles. As one does. Cafe Amsterdam is great for crowds. Very accommodating, we had no problems seating the lot of us together. Ohhh, and there's live music. Every night. It's great. Well, it's funny. It's entertaining. It's *very* Fairfax. The best place to go to check out the shooting stars from here is to head up the Bolinas Road (from the restaurant, turn right on Broadway and then make another immediate right) for about 4.7 miles up the twisty, windy road. There you'll find a trailhead that is far from the city's lights and over the hill from the fog. It's chilly up here so take a hat, torch, and a sleeping bag. Enjoy! |
