Another sweet pride of San Francisco is the local folk-rock band, Box Set. This five-member group formed in the mid-nineties around the acoustic duo partnership of Jim Brunberg and Jeff Pehrson. Brunberg and Pehrson split the songwriting duty, each contributing their own style for the Box Set sound. Their catchy acoustic-based songs have tight harmonies, and choruses that you'll find yourself singing absent-mindedly for days. Brunberg has a slower country sound, while Pehrson tends to pick up the tempo and is more pop. It's a great dynamic, which has enabled them to achieve a respectable level of success. Box Set started as an acoustic duo, but they now feature at least two of everything - singers, guitarists, keyboard players, bass players, and drummers. No, you won't be seeing double during their show, but you might see the multi-talented members show their ability to play different instruments. When I saw them at Last Day Saloon, they started off the second set with every member of the band changing instruments - lead guitar to keyboards, rhythm guitar to drums, bass to lead guitar, keyboards to bass, and drums to rhythm guitar. They played a ten-minute jam like this! I thought it was really cool. Over the past ten years, give or take, they've built up a strong following by playing all sorts of clubs and coffeehouses in and around San Francisco. Slim's is one of their regular stops these days, where you can catch them on the 20th, as the whole set. Steve Cefaratti |
