Black Lab

Paradise Lounge

Friday, October 30

They possess style and quality without over refinement, and substance without lumber or cloddiness. They have a sound and well-balanced conformation, and move in a free and effortless manner. Friendly with people, they make a great family pet. Not only are they one of America's most popular breeds, they're also one of San Francisco's most popular bands.

After releasing their debut CD, Your Body Above Me, Black Lab has emerged in the past year, with their catchy single, "Wash It Away," all over the airwaves. They've done a multitude of Bay Area shows, opening for bands such as Cracker at The Catalyst, Our Lady Peace at The Edge, and Wallflowers at Arco Arena. One of their favorite shows was at Shoreline Amphitheatre last May. It was kind of like a dream come true for bassist Geoff Stanfield who grew up in the Bay Area and attended concerts at Shoreline himself.

The band flirts with techno, while maintaining a pop-rock structure. They have a interesting collection of songs, which make for a great live set. "Can't Keep The Rain" and "Thin White Lie" are a couple of powerful rockers. "Time Ago" is a sort of love song with a nostalgic ambiance to it.

The mastermind behind most of the songs is Paul Durham. Durham is a passionate singer who sounds like he's pleasantly in pain. His falsetto is effective, but not overdone. His lyrics are familiar and they roll off his tongue in almost a hypnotic manner. I get the impression that a lot of effort goes into the songwriting as each musical idea is fully explored.

Black Lab will headline at Paradise Lounge's 12th Anniversary on Friday, October 30 with Dieselhed and MK Ultra also on the bill. Tickets can be ordered in advance through Ticketweb for $10. Paradise Lounge is a cool little club located at 308 11th St., in the SOMA district. This intimate club show for a local band with widespread recognition will be a treat.
