Beauty Bar

2299 Mission @ 19th

The word "kitschy" comes to mind when I think of the Beauty Bar, located in the heart of the Mission and just a jay-walk a way from Timo's. The Beauty Bar is the brainchild of the same people that started the Bubble Lounge in North Beach. It's the West Coast version of the same idea in New York where the Beauty Bar was born.

The Beauty Bar is catching attention -- it should for only being open for little over one month. Let's just say it's very pink, and very sparkly, and very hip with its racks of vintage cologne and Vitalis and rows of dryer chairs for chatting and drinking. I especially enjoy the plastic flowers and the multiple lounge-type settings it provides for business deals, people watching and plain old boozing.

It takes me back to the days of hair sets, blue rinses and the beauty college down the street where I grew up. My mother used to take me there for $5 haircuts because if they screwed up on a five year girl, who cares? It's still cute to see a small child with a pageboy haircut with her bangs cut too short.

The Beauty Bar is fabulous and should not be missed. Grab a Martini and manicure for $10. Manicurist is on duty Wednesday through Friday, 6-10 PM.
