Bean Bag sits on the corner of Divisadero and Hayes, across the street from The Justice League. It sticks to the basic San Francisco Café insides with sponge-painted walls and fake Toulouse-Lautrec paintings on the tables. They serve the complete arsenal of coffee drinks, as well as sandwiches and salads in the three to six dollar range. And a varied selection of omelets and crepes gets center stage on the menu board above the counter. Now, crepes exhume images of my orange-haired mom flaming a pan of crepes Suzette at one of her dinner parties circa 1983, so I tend not to order those overstuffed folds of French flatbread, especially for dinner. Bean Bag serves pasta in the evenings, lush big bowls of penne noodles starting at $5.95. Look for the blue menus next to the cash register and the tip jar. The Arrabiata is a mix of saute-ables: bell peppers, mushrooms, and garlic in a white wine and tomato sauce, topped with feta cheese. The garlic crunches and the heat from the sauce warms your mouth on cold nights. The Rollo has a hefty serving of chicken breast in the sauce, so wear loose clothes if you plan on eating it all. Other dishes feature seafood and cream sauces, and they all come with salty cheese toast. The crowd is young and frisky without being antsy; notebooks sit on tables sometimes, but no laptops when I’ve come in. There are some beers on tap, which is good for a pre-boogie and shimmy drink, but Bean Bag closes early, so don’t plan on going there after the last song on The Justice League’s dance floor.
