The lodge was bought, in fact, four years ago by a British woman by the name of Davina Phillips. And has since become an escape for the Tatler’ed, Harvey Nicks’ed British. There are six rooms, all looking directly across the small lagoon onto the ocean. It’s obvious that a woman is behind the decorating of the rooms. They’re cozy without being annoying, finished off with local nic-nacs. Truly a female behind it? There’s an abundance of towels, there’s a box in the bathroom with tampons, the four-poster beds are nothing short of romantic with their mosquito nets, there are heaps of magazines (Hello!, H&Q, and Euro rags) and there’s cotton wool and a bottle of Dettol for cleaning one’s grimy, greasy, sweaty face. Each room has its own porch looking through the coconut trees to the ocean. Meals are offered (freshly caught fish, fresh fruit, and tea served in a traditional English teapot), as are backwater trips. Also, if you’re feeling so inspired, you can get yoga instruction (on the roof) as well as indulge in the traditional Ayervedic massage. I’d give the massage a miss, the masseuse made me feel very uncomfortable (a first for me, usually I'm dreading the end). They should probably give guests the choice of a male or female masseuse though I’m betting there aren’t many female ones around here. This is definitely the place to come if you need to unwind. I was the only guest here so the staff were both over attentive as well as forgetful. (No one made my room one day until I requested some new towels.). If you’re expecting all the latest mod-cons, air-conditioning and all that jazz, you won’t be happy. The prices in dollars varies widely depending on the season you come here. Monsoon season is super cheap. With good reason as I can vouch that it does nothing other than bucket non-stop for much of the day. But if you have a few good books and all you want to do is to sit on your bed and read or write, the lighting in the room is brilliant. And the sound of the waves feels good. During these off seasons, a single costs $18/night. During the rest of the year when the weather is predictably sunny and hot, rooms range between $70-$115. (Single and double occupancy are considered the same). Contact information is as follows: Lagoona Davina, Tel: 91-471-480-049, Fax: 462-935. Email (though this may not be checked too often) davindia@hotmail.com. |
