26Mix

San Francisco's First Soundbar

26Mix (previously3024)

3024 Mission Street

Look out! You blinked and now there's another bar in the Mission. Originally known as 3024 (for about a month, the place hosted a series of underground DJ nights) and now officially called 26Mix (near 26th Street - how smart!), this "soundbar" should be a welcome addition to the San Francisco club scene.

What's a soundbar? I asked one of the owners and he told me this: On an extended stay in Tokyo, he discovered a type of theme bar called a soundbar. Essentially, they were bars that emphasized different genres of music delivered by high quality sound systems. But because these places were so tiny (it's Tokyo, remember?), these bars had little or no room for dance areas. 26MIX has taken this soundbar concept one step further by having space for a fairly good-sized dance floor.

26Mix also functions as a lounge with seating surrounding the dance floor, concurrently making it a large bar and a small, intimate nightclub. The space is still a little unstructured and bare - think Liquid - but over the coming months, gradual and significant improvements will be made. For instance, the crew at 26Mix is working on installing a killer sound system. Speakers will be spread throughout the club to create a multi-dimensional sound, and will be segmented to allow for conversation in areas other than the dance floor. The volume will be carefully adjusted to match the changing pace of the night.

26MIX is already attracting San Francisco's top-flight talent pool of DJs, and will also showcase hot bands that fit into the 26Mix groove (Posthoc favorites New Native has already played there). Sure it's still raw, but isn't that a refreshing change these days?
