Qool

Wednesday evenings

5-10pm

I hadn't been down there for a *long* time. And then Marco suggested that we go and meet at 111 Minna after work. You know, just to check it out. See the scene. All that jazz.

Wednesday night. QOÖL was the party. The line was long. No one was complaining.

The somewhat professional, mostly urban hipster clientele was getting DOWN. Here it was, 7pm in the evening and we were shaking some booty. Uhhh, and you were considering moving from San Francisco? Yeah, right.

Great vibe, convenient for Gulch and Financial District worker bees, go on Wednesdays. And don't bitch about the fact that it's light in there. All the better for seeing who's around you. SMB

First Wednesday of the month

Marco left a voicemail saying he'd been at 111 Minna since 5pm. It was now 10pm. I hesitated. Meeting someone who has been drinking for five hours when you've just woken up from a kip is no fun. So, I stalled. Best to wait until the happy dancing fools are happy and dancing. Then you can avoid ridiculous conversations altogether. And just dance. I arrived at midnight. I just danced. to continue

Do you have a brain? A body? Parts that work and aren't just for show? Yeah? Well, check out a sleek new chameleon, the art gallery turned dance club at night. 111 Minna offers a refreshing alternative to the usual nightclubbin' mind numbin' bump and grind. It's a great place for mixing friendly rapping and dancing on the aesthetically ponderous tip.

The venue is small, but breathable, housing a decent sized dance floor for shaking your groove thang happily counterbalanced by a beer and wine bar. Each night features a different musical attitude ranging from hip-hop to dance to experimental groove. Cover is five dollars cheap. The atmosphere is off-handedly chic and comfortably modern. The crowd is young, hip, and unpretentious.

Since art is a central focus, the lighting might at first seem dauntingly bright. Hey, you do want to see the art don't you? My suggestion, settle with a drink or two while the crowd trickles in and soon any light will be a rosy highlight to the ever stylish scene. The actual exhibitions are constantly changing. I was recently treated to collaborative artists' show of assorted bronze sculptures presented as the "City of Paris". My personal favorite was the larger than life lighter (with working flame!), which wooed my inner pyro child. 111 Minna is inconspicuously tucked away in an alley side street, which only adds to the delight of discovery, and proves once again that SOMA is effecting something of an underground revolution. Certainly something sexy is going on down south.
